What Is the Self-Determination Program?

The Self-Determination Program (SDP) is a California Regional Center program that gives eligible individuals and families more control over how their services and supports are selected and delivered.

Rather than relying exclusively on traditional Regional Center vendors, SDP participants can work with qualified service providers who meet their individualized needs and goals.

Through SDP, families may have greater flexibility to:

  • Select professionals who understand their family's needs.

  • Develop individualized services that support their goals.

  • Choose flexible scheduling and service delivery options.

  • Access specialized training and consultation.

  • Build practical skills that promote independence and quality of life.

Services must align with the participant's Individual Program Plan (IPP), approved spending plan, and applicable SDP funding requirements.

1. Parent-Led ABA & Caregiver Training

Helping parents build confidence, develop skills, and support meaningful progress in everyday life.

Our Parent-Led ABA approach places caregivers at the center of the intervention process.

Instead of relying solely on traditional direct therapy, we teach parents and caregivers evidence-based strategies they can use during everyday routines.

Areas of support include:

  • Understanding challenging behaviors and their underlying functions.

  • Teaching communication and replacement skills.

  • Developing positive reinforcement strategies.

  • Building independence with daily living skills.

  • Supporting toileting, hygiene, and self-care routines.

  • Improving transitions and following directions.

  • Developing individualized behavior support strategies.

  • Promoting skill generalization across home and community settings.

What makes our approach different?

Our services are led by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) who works collaboratively with caregivers to develop practical strategies that fit their family's lifestyle. We focus on teaching skills, supporting autonomy, understanding individual needs, and building caregiver confidence—not simply reducing behaviors.

Available service formats: In-home, community-based, virtual, and hybrid services.

2. IEP Advocacy & Educational Consulting

Helping families understand special education services and advocate for meaningful educational support.

Navigating special education can be overwhelming. Families may have questions about assessments, educational placement, behavioral supports, accommodations, and whether their child's needs are being appropriately addressed.

Our educational consulting services combine clinical expertise in behavior analysis with a family-centered approach to special education advocacy.

Services may include:

  • IEP document and assessment reviews.

  • Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) reviews.

  • IEP meeting preparation and consultation.

  • Parent concerns statements and advocacy strategies.

  • Educational goal and accommodation recommendations.

  • Review of school-based behavioral supports.

  • Guidance regarding special education assessments and Independent Educational Evaluations (IEEs).

  • Support understanding Section 504 plans and accommodations.

  • Collaboration and preparation for educational meetings.

Our goal is to help parents become informed, confident participants in their child's educational planning.

Important: Educational advocacy and consulting services are nonlegal services. We do not provide legal representation or legal advice. SDP funding for these services is not guaranteed and must be verified with the participant's Financial Management Service (FMS), spending plan, and Regional Center as applicable. Services that are the responsibility of a school district or another public program may not be eligible for SDP funding.
