Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) for Schools

What Is an FBA?

A Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is a structured process used to

determine the function, or purpose, of a student’s behavior. Rather than

focusing only on the behavior itself, an FBA examines the environmental

factors, triggers, and outcomes that maintain it. This process allows us to

develop targeted, individualized interventions that are proactive—not reactive.

When Is an FBA Needed?

Schools may benefit from an FBA when:

  • A student displays ongoing or escalating challenging behavior

  • Behavior is interfering with learning or classroom participation

  • Previous interventions have not been effective

  • There are concerns about safety (for the student or others)
