Reinforcement That Works: How to Build a Simple Token System for Daily Routines
Token systems can make routines smoother by turning ‘hard’ moments into clear, achievable steps. The key is keeping it simple and pairing it with meaningful rewards.

How to begin using a token system in your home today
Choose one routine and break it into 3-5 steps
Morning routine
Do you want to work on getting ready before school?
3 step Ex: Brush teeth, get dressed, get on bus
5 step Ex: Wake up, brush teeth, get dressed, eat breakfast, get on bus
Homework time
Does your child' struggle transitioning to homework?
3 step Ex: Get homework, do homework, go play
5 step Ex: Get backpack, find homework, find pencils, do work, go play
Bedtime routine
Does your child show behaviors when it's time for bed?
3 step Ex: Take bath, brush teeth, go to bed
5 step Ex: Eat dinner, take bath, get dressed, brush teeth, go to bed
Set up your token system
Pick 1–2 target behaviors (e.g., ‘first-time listening’, ‘stays with routine’).
Decide how many tokens earn a reward (start small: 3–5).
To do 3: You can edit the token board, create your own, or put 2 tokens on the 5 token page to make it only 3 more to earn.
Choose 2–3 rewards from a preference check.
You can simply ask what they want to work for or you can use a known high reinforcer for the day
Deliver tokens immediately with specific praise.
Ex: "Great job brushing your teeth bud!"
Troubleshooting
If motivation drops, reassess rewards.
Find something they find worth working for
If it’s too hard, lower the token requirement.
Make it easier to get the tokens.
If it’s too easy, increase slowly or add a new step.
Keep it a bit challenging without overwhelming them.
